More than 20,000 people gathered together in the Klenzepark, the green heart of the city of Ingolstadt for this year’s Classic Open Air concert. For more than 25 years, these popular events have been sponsored by Audi, which manufactures its cars in the region, as well as being a huge international supporter of classical music festivals.
The main event featured the KlangVerwaltung Orchestra, conducted by Kent Nagano, and supported by Farao Studios and Trust Your Ears. The programme of Beethoven, which featured solo pianist Mari Kodama, was followed by Peter Sadlo’s memorable percussion ensemble. On the second evening, Audi’s own employees performed in an orchestral ensemble of their own.
SHOWEM, one of the leading suppliers of NEXO systems in Germany, used the modular STM Series cabinets to build the main PA and delay lines, and GEO Series speakers for centre and side fills, and delay.
Main arrays were comprised of 12x STM M28s, the injection-moulded 2-way cabinets providing 90° of horizontal dispersion. Above these in the line were 3x STM B112 cabinets, with 12” driver and 4” voice coil in its hybrid horn-loaded design. Behind the slim arrays were flown subs, 6x STM S118 units on each side.
With a very wide audience area in the Klenzepark, the main PA arrays were spaced widely, necessitating a centre cluster of 10x GEO S8s, and side arrays of more GEO cabinets.
Delay line arrays were used. In the first, the arrays used 6x B112s with 24x M28 modules. In the second, a single line of 9x GEO S8 cabinets.
The only high-end modular line array in widespread use, NEXO’s STM Series has versatility designed in. Originally released with main, bass and subbass modules, the flexibility of the STM Series has been expanded by the arrival of the M28 ‘omnipurpose’ cabinet. These cabinets can be used on their own as a compact line array, or in conjunction with the B112 bass cabinet to fill in the acoustic gap between M28 and S118 sub. The addition of the B112 modules to the line substantially increases the lo-mid response and improves dramatic presence.
