EL TRI USES STM TO DAZZLE OAXACA FESTIVAL CROWD

Mexico City-based Tecno Son Espectaculos is one of the first rental companies in the Americas to invest in STM, with the company being involved in the design project from the start. CEO Sergio Zenteno has been using NEXO since being introduced to the brand in 2003, and was the first to bring it to Mexico. “I prefer Nexo over any other brand, and have used the Geo D10 and Geo T for many leading international artists and festivals,” he says. “STM represents a new level of performance and modularity. It gives us the resources to own and offer a system that can be used for the smallest requirements right through to the largest events we handle.

“For me, the most important feature is the exceptional energy it provides. Ultimately though, any new system needs to be accepted by all users out in the field, and I think STM will make this a reality in a very short space of time. During my 18 years as a live sound engineer I’ve used many brands, including some of the most powerful PA systems on the market. However I’m sure that no other system can produce the SPL energy of the STM while reproducing the entire frequency response over a very long distance.”

Oaxaca’s Auditorio Guelaguetza is an open-sided amphitheatre 85 metres deep, with a height ranging from 34 metres down to nine metres at the last row. It is exceptionally wide, with an audience area of more than 200° to cover. Zenteno had no doubt that STM could rise to the challenge. “STM is one of the most powerful PA systems in the world today; there are truly amazing innovations in the mid/high M46 drivers and cabinet design,” he says. “The B112 is an extremely powerful bass cabinet, with a frequency response which overlaps with that of the subs and mains, providing increased LF headroom.”

The system designed to cover the arena comprised of 18x M46 main full range speakers and one B112 bass cabinet, plus an array of 18x S118 subs, per side. The arrays were positioned 20 metres apart to cover the wide audience area. The system was powered and controlled by NEXO’s amplification and system management solution, the NUAR (Nexo Universal Amp Rack).

Tecno Son’s system engineer on the show was Ignacio Sanchez. “The setup using our complete system was really very easy for the first time, and the result was all the more impressive because, during the show, we were fighting against inclement weather, with lots of rain and wind,” he says.  “However we didn’t feel the effects on the sound, due to the good performance levels and consistency of STM.”

Zenteno adds a final seal of approval: “According to the Secretaria de las Culturas y Artes de Oaxaca from the Cultural Institute, systems used here in the past could not cover all the audience, particularly the last rows. With STM we were able to cover all the audience, with no more than 3 dB difference throughout the entire venue.”
