The installation by AVICLABO of a permanent audio system at the Sapporo Dome has set a new benchmark for stadium sound, the first in Japan to include subwoofers in its specification.

Since its grand opening in 2001 (in time to host the 2002 World Cup), Sapporo Dome has become well known in Japan as one of its five largest domes, and is also the countries only soccer stadium with an all-natural indoor grass-covered playing field. In 2019, it will be a host stadium for the Rugby World Cup.  With a maximum capacity of 53,738 people, Sapporo Dome is home to two professional sports teams, soccer and baseball, and has served as the stage for various international assemblies and events.

Major refurbishment has been completed on the main PA system, deploying numerous NEXO loudspeaker and amplification products, including the most powerful STM M28 modular line array modules and GEO S12-ST specialist long-throw line array cabinets, installed in an unusual central ‘bank’ in the centre of the Dome.

Three main objectives formed the brief for this project.

  • equal sound pressure level distribution
  • enhanced clarity of sound
  • powerful sound output that is not overwhelmed by the sound of cheering fans in the audience.

After a long selection process, NEXO’s line array system with its track record of many successes in stadium events that feature a superior level of entertainment was singled out from multiple candidate speaker brands, to meet Sapporo Dome’s aim of achieving a world-class audio equipment installation.

As a result of this renovation, equal sound pressure levels as well as high sound clarity were achieved throughout the entire Dome.  The new sound system has been highly praised by Dome personnel, delivering “massive improvements in the audibility of the announcements and background music.”

The NEXO RS18 high-performance 18” subbass cabinets at the heart of the system represent a first for fixed sound installations in Japanese stadia.  “The addition of subwoofers has brought us a solid low end never heard before in a stadium, which gives even more impact to our sound performance,” according to Manabu Takeda, from Yamaha Music Japan.

The performance characteristics of the NEXO loudspeaker cabinets belie their compact appearance, delivering powerful sound playback and accurate directionality control, but the positive feedback from Sapporo Dome staff and visitors can be directly attributed to the application of NEXO’s considerable expertise and experience in stadium acoustics.
